Participation in Government

Community Service is due by the end of the 1st quarter
if you are enrolled in a fall class, and by the end of the
3rd quarter if you are enrolled in a spring class!

Remember to hand in your Community Service assignment. You will have a hard time passing Government (and graduating!) without it. If you need a copy of the Community Service Sheet, click here and then print the page.

WEEKLY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS!

Both HW assignments are due the last day of the school week (usually Friday, but not always). A maximum of two HW assignments will be accepted per week. So you can hand in two cartoons AND two media HWs per week. Eight each of the cartoon and media HWs are due per quarter. You can hand in 2 extra of each HW for extra credit.

Need extra current events HW Media sheets? Click here and then print.

Political cartoons are a great way to convey opinions and ideas. Most of the time they are humorous, but not always.

To the right you see an artist's depiction of the reunification of Hong Kong with China. The top portion of the cartoon shows German reunification as breaking down walls (Berlin Wall). German reunification brought new freedoms to many Germans in East Germany.

The bottom of the cartoon shows Hong Kong being surrounded by a wall (symbolized by the Great Wall) after reunification. The artist is telling us that Hong Kong will lose the freedoms it had before reunification. This is a negative depiction of Hong Kong's reunification with China.

The first place to go when searching the internet for  a government site is www.usa.gov. From the main page you can explore many options. On the right side of the page, look for 'Government Agencies' then 'Federal Government' to access the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government.

If you want to register to vote, click here. Have fun! :)

One of Mr. DeVita's favorite political cartoons... What does this tell you about our society/culture?

Being a citizen of the United States of America is truly a great thing. We live in a free society with many economic opportunities. There are people who take this for granted though. As citizens of a free nation, we also have important responsibilities that cannot be neglected. We need to remain informed of current events, both local and international. An educated citizen is this country's most valuable asset. As long as we are educated and free thinking we will remain free. Find out the facts before you take a side on an issue. When you start relying on others to make up your mind on an issue, then you have just forfeited your freedom.

Being an American is a frame of mind. Be proud to be an American. Be proud of all that this nation has achieved in the name of freedom.
